Hurricane shutters on a coastal home

    What Are Hurricane Shutters

Permanent Storm Protection for Coastal Homes

Hurricane shutters are impact-rated panels or deployable systems that cover windows, doors, and openings to prevent wind-driven debris from breaching your home during a storm.

On the Carolina coast, storm shutters are not a luxury. New Hanover and Brunswick County are Wind-Borne Debris Regions requiring 140–150 mph wind resistance.

At Caribbean Hurricane Shutters, every installation starts with Design Pressure Analysis. We fasten into structural framing — not trim. We are the only OSHA-30 certified hurricane shutter company in coastal NC and SC.

    Hurricane Shutter Questions, Answered

Real answers from people who install hurricane shutters every week on the Carolina coast.

Hurricane shutters are impact-rated systems — panels, folding tracks, or rolldown slats — that cover windows, doors, and other openings before a storm. When deployed, they stop wind-driven debris from breaching your home’s envelope. See our full FAQ page for more detail.

It depends on your home. For most full-time residents, accordion shutters balance protection, ease of use, and cost. For second homeowners, motorized rolldowns are ideal. For HOA restrictions, Bahama or colonial shutters often work best.

Aluminum storm panels start at $22/sq ft installed, clear panels at $26/sq ft. Accordion from $38/sq ft. Bahama and colonial from $55/sq ft. A typical 3-bedroom coastal home ranges from $8,000 to $25,000. Use our cost calculator or call for a free in-home quote.

We serve all of coastal NC and SC — from Morehead City and the Crystal Coast through Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach, Brunswick County, and the Grand Strand including Myrtle Beach. See our service area map.

Yes, in most cases. NC and SC insurers offer wind mitigation credits for impact-rated, professionally installed shutters. We provide the Design Pressure analysis and product approvals your insurer needs.

Installation day is typically 1 to 3 days. Because every system is custom-fabricated, plan on 3–4 months from signing to installation. Schedule before May so shutters are ready before peak season.

Yes — full envelope protection is the goal. If a single opening is breached, internal pressure can spike and cause roof failure. We can prioritize critical openings first if budget requires phasing.

Rinse with fresh water every few weeks to remove salt. Lubricate tracks and locks with dry silicone (not WD-40) twice a year. Exercise shutters monthly. See our Maintenance Guide.

Yes. Our impact-rated systems carry ASTM and TAS certifications with full product approval docs. Bahama and colonial shutters are available in RAL powder-coat colors to match HOA requirements — see our color guide.

Plywood is a last resort, not hurricane protection. It is heavy, hard to store, weakens when wet, does not meet Wind-Borne Debris Region code, and will not qualify for insurance wind mitigation credit.
